Our Coaches

Jack Mayo – Head Coach & Co-Owner

I am originally from Buffalo, NY. (I will be okay with never seeing snow again – that’s why I chose the beach.) While growing up, I played hockey, golf and baseball. I graduated from Piedmont College, a small school in northern Georgia. I also attended the University of Montevallo (outside of Birmingham, AL) and played baseball at both colleges. Montevallo was where I found my love for CrossFit, while Piedmont was where I realized I wanted to help people become the best versions of themselves.

I got into CrossFit because I was one of two kids on the baseball team that couldn’t do a strict pull up and was overweight. I watched videos on how CrossFit changed people’s lives, what it did for them emotionally, and I wanted to be a part of it. I also fell in love with helping people, whether that was helping someone with nutrition, correcting a lift, or breaking down video in the cages with my fellow baseball teammates. I just want to bring out the confidence in everyone.

To me, CrossFit means community and here at GSCF, we have an amazing one thanks to all of our members, dropins and staff. I feel so honored and blessed to be your coach and help you achieve greatness in everything you do. You are the absolute best and if there is anything else we could do to help you, please let us know!

Mason Whitlock

Mason is a former runner turned obstacle course racer who stumbled into Gulf Shores CrossFit one day. Mason’s passion and drive took him to the Age Group Online Qualifier for the CrossFit Games multiple times.

Mason loves to work with our athletes and our athletes love working with him. Whether it’s helping a newcomer through the basics or another member with advanced techniques his enthusiasm and helpful approach is always appreciated.

Brandy Richard

I am originally from Georgia and moved down here to be by the beach and away from the insane traffic in 2014. I grew up playing basketball, soccer, softball, running cross country and sprinting for the track team. While at the University of West Georgia, I played intramural sports as well.

I got into CrossFit when I got bored with running and basic lifting. I’ve loved it and have been coaching since 2016. One of my passions is Olympic lifting, having competed in OLY for a long time. It was hard for me to give that up to focus on my health and overall fitness. Competing in OLY was awesome, but I wasn’t in the shape I needed to be. I was only strong. I set out on a path to lose weight while focusing on competing and coaching CrossFit. On that journey I have lost 70 lbs and have made many lifelong friends. I enjoy coaching soccer, basketball, cross country and softball as well.

I am a stickler for form and am a firm believer in the fact that if you can’t get the correct form while using light weight, it will come back to haunt you when the weight gets heavy. Learning the correct form will also help prevent injury.

I have a passion for teaching and helping people to reach their goals. As a member of GSCF , I have been able to witness the amazing culture and community here, which is the heart of a CrossFit box. I am excited to work with all of our members and drop-ins!
